I’ve been in business selling wooden toys and educational toys for 8 years now.  When I first started I knew I loved wooden toys. There weren’t really many around and they were difficult to find.   Thankfully now there are loads around in shops everywhere , but processes vary so much and the word ECO FRIENDLY TOY is thrown around so much – I've been wondering what REALLY makes a toy 'eco friendly' .  What do all these words mean – sustainable wood , FSC certified , non toxic etc. ?

You would be forgiven for believing that any type or brand of wooden toys is a safer option for your children to be playing with as opposed to plastic toys, as wood is a natural material, but… not all wooden toys are created equal and we parents need to be very aware of this. 

Wooden toys make a terrific addition to any toyroom.  Whilst I do believe that almost any toy is an educational toy, I prefer wood to plastic for a few reasons.

Wooden toys are generally extremely durable and safe , are not only colourful and fun to play with but encourage a child to explore their senses and imagination. 

I love the feel of wooden toys and the smell and texture is something that can not be replaced.  Its an impulse for me to smell a wooden toy and the difference in quality and feel is obvious.  I often find myself doing it when we get in new stock at the warehouse , it’s a sensory feeling that evokes a sense of calm and fun in me and I catch my kids doing it too and have a  giggle. 

Diversity and inclusion in the home, school and even toy box are so important.  All kids want to see themselves reflected in the environment and toys that they play with. Childhood really should be an inclusive place where everyone belongs. 

Being different from most others doesn’t need to be a dis - ability but rather a diff - ability and I’m happy to finally see the toy industry and other companies starting to embrace change and positively represent the 150 plus million kids with disability and difference world wide....
